TECHNOLOGY
GEOFOR is a polymer-coated fiberglass geogrid consisting of stretchable ribs with sufficient spacing to ensure effective bonding between two asphalt lifts. The polymer coating helps optimize chemical compatibility between the fiberglass reinforcement and the asphalt coating. Moreover, its self-adhesive nature facilitates better adhesion and speeds up installation.
HOW DOES GEOFOR ASPHALT STRENGTHEN ASPHALT COATINGS?
When a new coating is applied over an existing one, reflection cracks present in the old coating gradually spread onto the new layer. This spreading marks the beginning of asphalt wear, leading to numerous deteriorations in the asphalt over time, depending on the traffic volume in the area.
To stop crack propagation between two layers, a composite system is required with a strong tensile strength between these layers, capable of sustaining the spreading temperature of asphalt without melting or minimal elongation. This prevents cracks from spreading within this range.
Asphalt intermediate layers enable this process by forming a rigid intermediate layer that facilitates a strong bond between old and new asphalt, absorbing tensile stress and eliminating horizontal spread.
GEOFOR ASPHALT
Geofor Asphalt is made from high-performance fiberglass filaments with high tensile strength. It is thermally and chemically stable up to 230°C in bituminous mixture temperatures. It is unaffected by deicing salts, petroleum, or bitumen and has a mechanical protective coating. Geofor Asphalt provides maximum strength even at very low stresses. The Tensile Factor is a significant feature, as unreinforced or flexible asphalt coatings begin to show cracks at very low stresses—often as low as 1%. Geofor Asphalt has a Young's Modulus of 72GPA, indicating effective reinforcement. By reducing maintenance costs and lifecycle costs, Geofor Asphalt enhances the performance of the asphalt layer.
AIRPORT ASPHALT INTERMEDIATE LAYER
One of the major challenges encountered at airports is ensuring the continuity of asphalt coatings over long periods. Geofor Asphalt provides a sustainable solution by delaying maintenance intervals to a reasonable extent.
Geofor Asphalt can be used for the following applications:
Currently, Geofor Asphalt significantly extends the lifespan of asphalt runway coatings at airports.
USE OF ASPHALT INTERMEDIATE LAYERS
Geofor Asphalt can be applied to all cracked asphalt and concrete coatings due to thermal stress/wear and related issues. It can also be used in cracks caused by uneven settlement, joints in concrete coatings, and road widening.
Due to its high tensile strength and excellent adhesion to the asphalt layer, Geofor Asphalt not only controls crack growth but also increases the load-carrying capacity of the asphalt coating structure.
Geofor Asphalt can also be used in different asphalt layers on top of each other, such as in joints without expansion joints in bridges/speed bumps or on expansion joints in concrete coatings. It has successfully been used worldwide to combat reflection cracks initiated by one or more of the following:
